Community Programs
Since its founding, the VFW has been a staple in the community. Troop support, youth activities, volunteering and scholarship programs are a few of the ways the VFW shines in the many communities and cities where Posts are located.

Patriot's Pen
Open to students in grades 6–8, this national essay competition gives students an opportunity to share their thoughts on an annual patriotic theme while competing for scholarship awards. If you have questions, please email Post Commander.
- Eligibility: Grades 6-8 students
- Deadline: October 31st annually
- Award: Monetary award for each level

Voice of Democracy
Open to students in grades 9–12, this audio-essay competition challenges high school students to express their views on democracy and patriotism while competing for scholarships at the local, state, and national levels. If you have questions, please email Post Commander.
- Eligibility: Grades 9-12 students
- Deadline: October 31st annually
- Award: Monetary award for each level

Teacher of The Year
Each year the VFW recognizes three exceptional teachers - one each from the elementary, junior high and high school levels - for their outstanding commitment to teach Americanism and instill patriotism in their students. Please email packages to Post Commander.
- Eligibility: K-12 Classroom Teachers
- Deadline: October 31st annually
- Award: Monetary award for each level

Scout of The Year
The VFW Scout of the Year program provides high school students who are registered, active members of a Boy or Girl Scout Troop, Venturing Crew, or Sea Scout Ship the opportunity to be recognized for their standout citizenship and patriotism. Please email packages to Post Commander.
- Eligibility: Registered Scouts, grades 9-12
- Deadline: March 1st annually
- Award: Monetary award for each level

JROTC of The Year
The VFW JROTC of the Year program rewards outstanding cadets for their leadership, community involvement, and academic achievement. This recognition highlights the future leaders of our nation. If you have any questions, please email Post Commander.
- Eligibility: Active JROTC Cadets
- Deadline: February 12th annually
- Award: National recognition and scholarship

Public Servant Award
The VFW selects emergency medical technicians (services), law enforcement, firefighter, dispatcher and explosive ordnance disposal technicians personnel to receive VFW Public Servant Awards.

- Award: Local distinction and certificate
